As published in the Government of India, Gazette notification no. 25 dated 21-06-2005, the Right to Information Act, 2005 (No.22 of 2005) of the Parliament has received the Presidential assent on 15th June, 2005.
The Government of India has enacted "The Right to Information, 2005" to provide for setting out the practical regime of right to information for citizens to secure access to information under the control of Public Authorities in order to promote transparency and accountability in the working of any Public Authority.
The Right to Information Act, 2005 has converted the prevailing culture of secrecy into a culture of openness and transparency in the working of the Government. It will go a long way in strengthening our democratic institutions, empowering the public, removing corruption and greater involvement of citizens in the development of the nation.
